ANALOGUE FOREST GARDENS

Little Smile Sapugastana / Nikapotha Analog Forestes are systems that harbour ecologically and economically benefitial species to ensure not only financial viability but also ecological sustainability, National Study Sri Lanka. Observing the mass destruction of nature by cutting down trees and killing animals, our founder decided to start and promote analogue forestry systems in Sri Lanka. Although it is not economically profitable, he wanted to save nature and preserve it for future generations. So analogue forestry is allocated in parts to all projects as a matter of principle.

HISTORY
The land, with an area of 73+50 acres, is home to wild animals and contains highly valuable and rare tree species. Some of the land was cultivated during the British Colonial era with tea, coffee and rubber, and then renaturalised after the British left the country in 1948.
Desaster - Burning forests
PRESENT STATUS
As a result of fires during the drought and the burning down of large section of what mountain forest was left, wild animals such as elephants, leopards, deer, different types of monkey, snakes and birds find refuge here in one of the very few secure places where they can live and be safe from hunters.
With our expert knowledge, we are planting rare herbal plants and spices, as well as trees to reserve water and save water resources.

BEING A MEMBER
In the past 20 years, the population of Sri Lanka has grown rapidly, and living costs have skyrocketed. For this reason, an increasing number of people try to earn money for the daily needs without a thought for tomorrow. Remaining pristine forest was endangered when the demand for wood exploded due to reconstruction after the tsunami catastrophe. Thanks to high financial support from abroad, it even became economical to cut trees in rural areas. Valuable trees from private land were even sold. Wild animals tried to hide in grasslands, but hunters burned it down. Others came into conflict with farmers.
Another problem is the cultivation of monocrops such as sugar cane, tea, coffee, rubber and fast-growing timber for furniture. The hill country water resources are already in a critical situation.
It is not easy to establish the idea of analogue forestry under such conditions, but somebody has to start somewhere and set an example.
