Our Own Estate: Dikkapitiya

DIKKAPITIYA ESTATE

The land is situated along the road from Beragala to Wellawaya at the 195 mile post. The old estate belongs to the village of Nikkapotha.
Hard work
HISTORY
Under the British, the land was part of a large estate with different crops such as tea, pepper and rubber. In 1970, the Indian owner planted sugarcane and established a factory there. When in 1988 Mr. Ganeshaligam, mayor of the capital city Colombo bought this land, the entire sugar process came to an end and the land became barren. There was no new cultivation nor any maintainance of the existing crops, such as pepper, cocoa, etc. In 2006, when the Little Smile Association bought the land, even the houses and roads were damaged and the most valuable trees had been cut down. Parts of the land were regularly affected by fire.
